Urumieh Lake is the largest internal and self-contained body of water of Iran, measuring 55,0000 Acres and is located in the North-West of the Iranian plateau. After Bahrolmeyyet Lake in Palestine, Urumieh is the saltiest lake in the world. The lake itself is very active in biological terms, the water is full of living bacteria, sea weed and small organisms named Artemia Urumiana. The lake is also frequented by birds such as ducks, cranes and flamingos. There are also a number of beautiful islands within the lake itself. The high salt content of the water makes it impossible to sink in the lake and the small port of Bandar Sharafkhaneh is a popular attraction for both locals and tourists alike. Urumieh Lake is ranked as the twentieh most beautiful natrual lake in the world. The mineral-rich mud that lies beneath the salt layers of the lake is famed for having very beneficial effects for those with athro-diseases.
