Ancient "Sabaean Mandean" religious sect preforming the ritual of cleansing during an annual baptism on the shores of the Karoun River, Khuzestan province, southeast Iran. Water is everything to the Sabaean Mandeans who are baptized in it, get married in it, and receive their last rites by the river's edge. July 21, 2005 marks the 445375th birth anniversary of prophet Adam on the Mandean's calender. Adam is Mandeans' fist prophet. Followers of the ancient religious minority believe there are between 80,000 to 200,000 Sabaean Mandeans in the world, with the vast majority of them in Iraq, They generally do not accept converts. Iranian Mandeans are around 15,000 in population.
